When planning a live product launch, reliable wireless video transmission is often one of the biggest technical challenges. That challenge becomes even greater when the presenter is moving through a large metal structure while speaking to a live audience.
For the launch of a new Envior 400 and 100 electric buses from Alexander Dennis, working with Tapestry, I deployed the Teradek Ranger II wireless video system to provide uninterrupted live video coverage as the presenter guided guests through both the exterior and interior of the vehicle during the reveal event.
The Challenge
The production required a presenter-led walkaround of the new electric bus, allowing the audience to experience the vehicle’s design, features and passenger environment in real time.
Unlike a traditional stage presentation, the camera needed to move freely around the vehicle and then inside the bus while maintaining a stable wireless connection back to the production team.
From an RF perspective, a double-decker bus presents several challenges.
Large metal structures can significantly impact wireless signal propagation, while moving between exterior and interior environments introduces additional obstacles and potential signal reflections. At the same time, the presenter needed complete freedom of movement without being restricted by cable runs.
Because the event was being delivered live, reliability was critical.
Why We Chose the Teradek Ranger
For this production, the Teradek Ranger II was selected due to its proven performance in demanding live event and broadcast environments.
The Ranger provides ultra-low latency wireless video transmission, making it ideal for productions where directors, vision mixers and event teams require a real-time camera feed without noticeable delay. Its robust RF performance also makes it particularly well suited to large venues, complex event spaces and environments where maintaining signal integrity can be challenging.
The ability to move seamlessly between the outside and inside of the bus while maintaining a reliable video link was a key requirement for the success of the launch.
The Production Workflow
A camera operator accompanied the presenter throughout the reveal, capturing detailed exterior shots before moving inside the vehicle to showcase the passenger experience and interior design. The Teradek Ranger transmitted the camera feed wirelessly back to video village, where the feed was distributed for recording, vision mixing and display on the large LED wall, allowing the audience to follow the presentation without interruption.
This approach eliminated the need for long cable runs while giving the presenter and camera operator complete flexibility to move naturally through the launch environment.
The result was a far more engaging experience for attendees, allowing them to see the vehicle from multiple perspectives while maintaining the pace and energy of a live reveal.
Looking Ahead
As live events continue to demand more dynamic and immersive presentation formats, wireless camera systems are becoming increasingly important.
The Alexander Dennis launch was a great example of how wireless video technology can help production teams create engaging experiences while overcoming practical challenges that would traditionally require significant cabling infrastructure.
The Teradek Ranger remains one of the most effective tools available for productions that require broadcast-quality wireless video transmission, particularly in demanding environments where reliability cannot be compromised.
