Glasgow 2026 with TNT and HBO Max

This summer I worked on Warner Bros. Discovery’s coverage of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, broadcasting on TNT Sports and HBO Max from the swimming at Tollcross.

It felt like a full-circle moment. Twelve years earlier, I had worked on the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, the first of many large-scale sporting events I’ve been part of, from Baku 2017 through to the Paris Paralympics in 2024.

Based in the mixed zone with presenter Ed Jackson and pundits Ellie Simmonds, Michael Jamieson and Mark Foster, we captured interviews with athletes almost as soon as they stepped away from the pool, having just won a medal, broken a record or produced the best performance of their career.

The scale of both the event and the broadcast production was impressive. Around 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories competed across 11 days, while Warner Bros. Discovery produced more than 600 hours of coverage across HBO Max, dedicated TNT Sports channels and the all-day Commonwealth Games 360 programme.

Although we were broadcasting live from Glasgow, the programme was directed remotely from a gallery in London rather than an onsite outside broadcast unit. It is an approach that is becoming increasingly common at major events and relies on a huge team of producers, directors, engineers, sound crews and technical staff working together across different locations.

There was plenty to celebrate in the pool. Scotland won 12 swimming medals, including five golds, with Duncan Scott setting a Games record in the 200m individual medley and Faye Rogers becoming Scotland’s first Commonwealth Games Para swimming champion. There were several more Commonwealth Games records and some incredibly fast performances, including Cameron McEvoy’s winning time in the 50m freestyle, just nine hundredths of a second outside the world record.

The most memorable part was being so close to the athletes at such an important moment, while also seeing the scale of the team and technology needed to bring those moments to viewers at home. Capturing those reactions as part of a major international broadcast, in my home city, made Glasgow 2026 a particularly special event to work on.

Paris 2024 Paralympics

That’s a wrap from La Défense Arena in Paris, home of the Para Swimming competition for the Paris 2024 Paralympics.

Working with Timeline Television, and Whisper Productions I was based at La Défense for two weeks, where we delivered live daily coverage of the Games from the Channel 4 studio, presented by Clare Balding, Rose-Ayling-Ellis and former Team GB Paralympian,, Ellie Simmonds.

Our first broadcast made history as Rose Ayling-Ellis became the first deaf person to present live sports coverage on TV with the assistance of her team of interpreters.

A 200 strong team from Timeline, Whisper and Channel 4 produced extensive coverage of the Paralympics, with more than 1,300 hours of live sport airing for free across Channel 4, More4, Channel 4 Streaming and Channel 4 Sport’s YouTube.

Behind the scenes: Working across Scotland during 11 days of the UCI World Championships 2023. Providing RF handheld camera coverage at the Downhill Mountain Bike World Cup in Fort William for Cameron, and filming at venues throughout Glasgow for the Women’s Road Race, Flatland, Cycleball and Artistic Cycling World Cup for UCI social channels and broadcasters for Mallard Productions.

UCI Esports World Championships 2023

Behind the scenes: I recently provided camera systems for the UCI Esports World Championships 2023 being held in Glasgow, broadcast live on Eurosport, for Cameron.

Hosted at The Engine Works, the event saw athletes compete on the Zwift virtual cycling platform with users from around the world in front of a live studio audience.

Using the Boxx Meridian with the Sony PMW-400, as well as supplying a wireless comms solution, I was able to assist in capturing the event for UCI and Visit Scotland as well as supplying camera relays for the venue.

CBBC Gym Stars at Glasgow 2018

I was filming last week with Drummer Television for the next season of CBBC’s Gym Stars. The series goes behind the scenes of the lives of some of the UK’s most promising young gymnasts.

We followed two promising junior gymnasts and their teammates as they competed at the Glasgow 2018 European Championships. Tune into Gym Stars Series 2 on CBBC early next year to find out how they got on.

Andy Murray Live for Sky Sports

This week I worked alongside Sky Sports and Lagardére Productions to produce feature content for Andy Murray Live at the SSE Hydro, which was broadcast live on Sky Sports 3 and streamed worldwide.

Several packages were filmed and produced throughout the day for the evenings live broadcast, which included interviews with British No.1 Andy Murray, Jamie Murray, Tim Henman and Grigor Dimitrov.

Andy Murray Live, hosted at the 10,000 capacity SSE Hydro, is the brainchild of Murray, who wanted to build a legacy tennis event in the UK which raises valuable funds charities including Unicef and Glasgow-based charity Young People’s Futures.

Scottish Open 2015

I spent a few days in Gullane, East Lothian, this week covering the 2015 Scottish Open golf tournament for a range of international broadcasters.

Working for Mallard Productions I used the PMW-400 covering press conferences and capturing some of the top names in golf on the practice range and playing the Pro-Am competition. Players at the tournament included Justin Rose, Phil Mickelson and Colin Montgomerie.

Footage was edited on site and immediately delivered to the client to be distributed to broadcasters worldwide.
